The Steel Woods with Jive Mother Mary

Special Event, Folk, Americana/Roots

The Steel Woods Like their name, The Steel Woods are a hybrid musical force, part hard-edged, part Americana roots country folk, man-made, yet organic, rock but also bluegrass, R&B, blues, gospel, soul and heavy metal, “the materials which America is built on” according to co-founder Wes Bayliss. The Nashville-based band is also steeped in the ethos of Southern rock, with the music on its debut Woods Music/Thirty Tigers release, Straw in the Wind, both timeless and indefinable, sounding like it could’ve been recorded at any point during the past half-century. “That’s kinda the idea,” nods Bayliss. The Steel Woods trace an unbroken line from Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams through Willie and Waylon, then the Allmans, Blackfoot, The Band and Tom Petty up through contemporaries like Kings of Leon and the Avett Brothers. Jive Mother Mary The first time you see Jive Mother Mary live it’s like a musical breath of fresh air—a gust of excellent songwriting and skilled musicianship. Hailing from Burlington, NC, Mason Keck (guitar, vocals), Tyler Schulz (guitar, vocals), Seth Aldridge (drums, vocals) and William Sanders (bass, vocals) bring to the table qualities rarely found in today’s music: four guys playing instruments and singing harmonies. Firmly rooted in American music with a tinge of it’s British brethren, seeing the band in-person truly allows you to appreciate the intensity of their performance.

Kings X with Sound & Shape and Clay Howard

Special Event, Rock

King's X King's X is an American rock band that combines progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups. The band's lyrics are largely based on the members' struggles with religion and self-acceptance. King's X was ranked No. 83 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Sound & Shape "We don't have to buy what they sell." It's a lyric from Sound & Shape's new EP, but it could also be seen as an ethos the band has clung to for the length of its career. Starting off in a time where Rock And Roll was seen as almost passe and practically unmarketable, the band saw a point on the horizon and has worked tirelessly to reach it. An artistic vision based on both brutal honesty are theatric artiface, Sound & Shape's body of work speaks as a testament to the belief in the transformative power of music, Rock and Roll specifically. Clay Howard I sing songs with people I like for whoever wants to show up. It is about the song(s) and creating music with and for people who love music.

EmiSunshine & The Rain

Special Event

EmiSunshine (Website) It’s nearly impossible to explain the exceptional talents of EmiSunshine, the 13-year-old prodigy from East Tennessee who has captured the nation’s attention and enchanted hearts-a-many with her musical wizardry. Born Emilie Sunshine Hamilton, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has been surrounded by family members who possess a genuine love for “salt-of-the-earth,” mountain melodies and lyrics. Emi embraced the classic country, blues and folk music that echoed throughout her Madisonville, TN home. Steeped in Appalachian music, Emi is a true vocal stylist. Influenced by legends (Loretta Lynn/Tanya Tucker/ TheLouvin Brothers), she is a throwback to earlier eras of country music when trendsetters like Bessie Smith, June Carter, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams made history. The sassy, strikingly powerful, ultra entertainer is bound and determined to follow in their footsteps, and while she has some pretty big shoes to fill, this little lady fits the bill. Emi launched her professional career performing at churches, community outings, and local festivals. It’s the spectacular 2014 performance at a Tennessee flea market that skyrocketed her career to become a worldwide phenomenon when a video of her stage show went viral on YouTube. Since her breakout at just nine years old, Emi has garnered more than 14 Million YouTube views and a half million Facebook followers. Emi’s indescribable and inexplicable talents have taken the world by surprise. The witty songwriter self-produces all of her music (live and in the studio). Emi plays a wailing guitar; she can make the mandolin cry and the ukulele sing. Her ability to combine her youthful, bubbly disposition with deep, meaningful and rather dark song content brings her imagination to life.

Gold Connections with Victoria Victoria and Cactus Black

Special Event, Rock

Gold Connections Gold Connections' Will Marsh went to school with Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo at the College Of William & Mary, where longtime friend Toledo produced and recorded Marsh's debut S/T EP last year on Fat Possum Records. Through support tours with Car Seat Headrest, opener slots with bands such as The Districts, Futurebirds, Soccer Mommy and even a tour through Europe culminating with a showing at the esteemed Primavera Club festival, Will Marsh & Gold Connections have built a solid foundation for their upcoming full length effort, Popular Fiction, which was engineered and produced at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium in North Carolina. The new LP, Popular Fiction is a steady piece of reassurance and we are thrilled to hear how far Will Marsh has come. And we can see, with total clarity, just how far he can go. Victoria Victoria Victoria Victoria is a North Carolina band based out of Winston Salem. A mix of synthesizers, keys and sultry vocals makes for an enticing soundscape that nods to r&b and gospel music. VV is fronted by 23 year old Tori Elliott, who often pens songs of deep reflection sung over a groove worthy of a serious head bop. Their new single, Body Body, was released in June 2018. Cactus Black Cactus Black is a three-piece rock outfit from Winston-Salem, NC. They dabble in storytelling songs that incorporate a bit of folk, old-school country, indie and garage rock. Their first record, Las Cruces, was released in 2013, followed by "Midnight at the Crossroads" in 2017. They have two new releases they are celebrating in 2018: an EP titled "No Accomplice" that captures a more stripped down version of the sound, and a live 7" that brings the noise. They are generally accompanied by their faithful friend Gato.

Heavy Rebel Pre-Party

Special Event

Join us for the Heavy Rebel Pre-Party! Heavy Rebel Weekender is the absolute best party with all of your friends for 18 years! 3 days of rockin’ music, classic cars, thrilling sideshow acts, titillating burlesque performances and wild contests! Held over 4th of July weekend in Winston-Salem, NC’s beautiful downtown arts district! The Goddamn Gallows (Website) Spit from the heart of America's Rust Belt, arising from a night of flophouse violence. Drifting across the states, The Goddamn Gallows cemented their sound in Portland, OR and later in Los Angeles, CA, where they lived in abandoned buildings, squatter camps, storage units and shoebox apartments. In 2007, they left everything behind and spent the next 4 years living out of whatever vehicle would get them to the next town. Building upon their original sound of twanged-out, punk rock gutterbilly (Life of Sin 2004 and Gutterbillyblues 2007), they began picking up stray musicians along the way and adding to their sound; washboard, accordion, mandolin and banjo (Ghost of the Rails 2009 and 7 Devils 2011) creating a sound referred to as "hobocore", "gypsy-punk" or "americana-punk", while never being stuck in any one sound. The Koffin Kats (Website) It’s been over 12 years since Vic, Tommy, & E-Ball started The Koffin Kats in their parent’s basements and played for beer in local Detroit bars. A psychobilly/punk band with influences ranging from The Damned to The Stray Cats, The Koffin Kats have covered a lot of ground. Eight albums later, a few member changes, and over 2,000 live shows from international tours… the founding lineup has returned in 2016. Six years after his departure, Tommy Koffin is back playing guitar with The Koffin Kats. With Vic Victor on lead vocals and upright bass, and E Ball Walls on drums. The trio has released a new track called “ Cold Blood, Dead Eyes.” They will be touring North America and Europe throughout 2016.

Darrell Scott Bluegrass Band with special guest Malcolm Holcombe

Special Event, Bluegrass, Folk, Americana/Roots

Darrell Scott “I look like an insider because of everything I‘ve done but I always felt like an outsider,” Darrell Scott says. “And that’s important—to be an outsider.” He’s also a master. Whether its’ rock, folk, country or blues, Darrell Scott, the 4-time Grammy nominated Nashville songwriter, has written hits all the way from Brad Paisley and the Dixie Chicks to Del McCoury, Sam Bush and Keb Mo; contributing songs to three of 2016’s best albums alone. ‘It’s not surprising that Scott wrote nine of the 14 songs on his own new album, “Couchville Sessions,” and less surprising that he wrote three songs with the like-minded Americana artist Hayes Carll on Carll’s magnificent new disc, “Lovers and Leavers,”’ in addition to “1000 Things” from Sarah Jarosz’s award winning “Build Me Up From Bones” album. What’s more surprising is that Scott came off of a year and a half of touring in Robert Plant’s Band of Joy with a co-write on R&B star Anthony Hamilton’s new recording, “Save Me,” the opening track on “What I’m Feelin.” Over the past two years Darrell has produced, co-written and performed on three songs from Zac Brown’s latest project “Heavy Is the Head,” in addition to producing Jonathan Edwards latest and Malcolm Holcombe’s upcoming 2017 release, “Pretty Little Troubles.” But these partnerships all makes sense: Although they hail from different genres, these artists are master craftsmen at fitting words to notes. Malcolm Holcombe Malcolm Holcombe grew up in western North Carolina, home to some of the planet's oldest mountains and some of America's deepest musical traditions. Radio and TV fueled Malcolm's musical passions as a kid, and music became even more important after he lost both his parents relatively young. He toured with bands and landed in Nashville, where he took up an inconspicuous station at the back of the house - the very back - at Douglas Corner, one of the city's best singer/songwriter venues.

The Felice Brothers with special guests Twain

Special Event, Folk, Rock, Country

The Felice Brothers The Felice Brothers’ new album Life in the Dark is classic American music. At once plainspoken and deeply literate, the band’s latest features nine new songs that capture the hopes and fears, the yearning and resignation, of a rootless, restless nation at a time of change. Life in the Dark also coincides with The Felice Brothers’ 10th anniversary as a band. Hailed by the AV Club for a sound at once “timeless, yet tossed-off,” they’ve released plenty of music over the past decade, often on their own without a record label, but the new album is the fullest realization yet of the band’s DIY tendencies. Self-produced by the musicians and engineered by James Felice (who also contributed accordion, keyboards and vocals), the Felice Brothers made Life in the Dark themselves in a garage on a farm in upstate New York, observed only by audience of poultry. Twain This fall, Twain will release a new record of songs - Rare Feeling - on Keeled Scales Records (Austin, TX). These recordings have been gently fermenting for an extended period of time, and are now ready for consumption. The foundation of the record was captured in a tool shed by the great magi-bard, S. McMicken (Dr. Dog), using ancient and secret methods of time distortion. The resultant reels were then brought to Richmond VA, where master engineer and sound-seeker Adrian Olsen guided the songs into completion. As with the previous LP, the band has labored to present a purely AAA analog disc, and is eager for you to experience the special magnetic warmth that results from the process. (We once again are indebted to the mysterious and mighty Paul Gold of Salt Mastering for his kind attention).
