Enjoy the great outdoors while getting fit as we set off at a comfortable, yet steady pace through the nature preserve. Open to novice and skilled hikers alike, this adult hiking club will cover 2-3 miles on uneven terrain. Pre-registration required. Notes: This hike qualifies for our 100 mile hike club. Come prepared to hike approximately 2 to 3 miles on uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing. Please bring your own water bottle.

Discover the elusive world of the often misunderstood, yet beneficial bat. Explore echolocation and learn fascinating facts about North Carolina's only flying mammal. Lake Wylie Evening Kayak Tour

Nature, Tour, Kayaking

Paddle the edges of McDowell Nature Preserve and get a chance to see the sun set over Lake Wylie with our certified and experienced instructors. Learn the history of Lake Wylie and meet new people in a fun environment. All equipment provided. Pre-registration required. Additional dates for this program are August 8, 15, 22 and 29 same time. Notes: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring your our own water bottle, towel, extra clothes, sunscreen, hat and a snack. Tour is about 2.5 miles of paddling.

Free Family Fishing

Try out fishing without having to buy the gear! We'll provide the rods, tackle and bait for you! Program includes instruction on how to bait a hook, cast and reel in and safely remove a hooked fish. Pre-registration (for all participants, adult and child alike). Notes: Parent participation required. Choose 1 time slot (9:30am, 10:45am or 1:30pm). Meeting place will be at the Waterfront Deck.

Lake Wylie Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Yoga

Bring a whole new perspective to your asana practice with yoga on a SUP! Become immersed in nature, gain piece of mind, and challenge your balance and strength. This class includes a brief paddle basics class along with a gentle vinyasa practice led by an experienced and certified 200 RYT instructor. Prior experience is not necessary. All gear is included. Pre-registration is required. Notes: You must be able to swim to participate. Please bring your own water bottle, sunscreen, towel, hat, shoes with a back strap and a change of clothing (quick dry clothing, no cotton).

Lake Wylie Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Tour

Enjoy the afternoon Stand Up Paddle boarding on Lake Wylie. This two-hour tour is for beginners and advanced skill levels. We will paddle the edges of McDowell Nature Preserve, look for wildlife and enjoy spending some time outside on the water. Pre-registration required. Additional date for this program is August 25th the times on this day are 9am to 11am and 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Notes: Please dress appropriately for the weather (quick drying clothing, no cotton) and be prepared to be in the water. Bring your our own water bottle, towel, hat and sunscreen.

Lake Wylie Family Kayak Tour

Paddle the edges of McDowell Nature Preserve with our certified and experienced instructors while enjoying nature with your family. Learn about the natural history that makes Lake Wylie a great destination for wildlife viewing. All equipment provided. Children 5-9 years old are required to be in a tandem with an adult. One person registers per tandem kayak. Pre-registration required. Additional dates for this program are August 11th and 25th same time. Notes: Children 5-9 years old are required to be in a tandem with an adult. One person registers per tandem kayak; 10 and up can be in a single or tandem as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring your own water bottle, towel, extra clothes, sunscreen, hat and a snack. Tour is about 2.5 miles of paddling.

Summer Saturday Morning Storytime

Spend your Saturday morning in the beautiful outdoors instead of watching Saturday morning cartoons on the couch. Start with an exciting nature themed storybook read out-loud, followed by a self-led outdoor activity for your family. It is a great way to start the weekend! Perseid Meteor Shower Party

Take a leisurely stroll through the McDowell Prairie as the new moon falls on the peak viewing nights of the Perseid Meteor Shower. With cooperative weather, we may see up to 90 meteors per hour as we hike, stopping along the way to gaze up at the stars. An email will be send out prior to the event with more information. Pre-registration required (for all participants, adult and child alike). Notes: Meeting place will be at the Four Horse Rd entrance of the McDowell Prairie. This hike qualifies for our 100 mile hike club. Come prepared to hike approximately 2 to 3 miles on uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, long pants and weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing. Please bring your own water bottle. Red flashlights will be provided. Be advised that event will be cancelled if inclement weather arises.

Celebrating Nature: International Bat Night

Gather the family and head to McDowell Nature Preserve for an evening of education and fun. Celebrate International Bat Night in style by the campfire and play educational games with the family to learn why these often misunderstood animals are so important to humans. Once the sun goes down, we will venture along the trails in search of bats and other nocturnal wildlife. Pre-registration required (for all participants, adult and child alike).
