Charlotte Tempestry Project

Nature

Be a part of a beautiful and informative art installation about the climate of Charlotte! Over the course of a few months we will be working on small woven tapestries that illustrate the average daily temperature of Charlotte. Each tapestry will illustrate a single year consisting of 365 lines of yarn (one for each day). The color of the yarn changes color depending on the average temperature for that day. The final result is a small colorful 'tempestry'. When several of the 'tempestries' are hung together then the story becomes much richer. You can see how the climate in Charlotte has changed over the course of many years. You don't need to know how to weave because we will show you AND provide you with the loom and all the materials needed to weave your Tempestry! Would you like to participate? We will meet on the 2nd & 4th Thursday evenings at Reedy Creek Nature Center for the months of April & May. If you can't make it to the first meeting but still want to participate then please contact Kat Sweaney at Reedy Creek Nature Center (980)314-1119. Ages 12 and up $10

Stream Restoration Tour

Nature

The trails have been closed for months on end due to a massive stream restoration project. It is now done and most of the trails are reopened! Discover the history of the streams and what happened to lead up to the damage. Explore the restoration techniques using our stream table model. We will then go on a walk to see parts of the stream that didn't need to be restored so you can see what a healthy stream looks like. We will then venture to see new parts of the stream and visualize what it may look like in 10 years! This project is extremely exciting because it is one of the few stream restorations of its size and scope. It has the potential to educate generations on the importance of streams to the ecosystem!
