Naturalist Niche:Big Tree Walk

Old growth stands can be found in rare pockets throughout the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. One of those small areas is right here in Chimney Rock State Park. This moderate hike rambles through an area typically not open to the public in order to introduce participants to characteristics of old growth forests and native trees. Advance registration is required.

Family Animal Encounters

We are lucky to have incredible Animal Educators to help us spread the word on the important roles they play in the Park. Join one of our Park naturalists for an informal program where your family will love meeting some of our wilder teammates! Kids of all ages are sure to take home some fun facts and special memories. Then, grab a Track Trail brochure at the Animal Discovery Den and round out the day with a hike along our Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 education stations. Don’t forget your camera! Cost: Included with Park admission. Time: daily at 2pm.

13th Annual Race to the Rock (5K run or 25-mile bike)

The grand finale of the 15th Annual Lake Lure Olympiad – a 3-day family sports festival that showcases the beautiful scenery of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, the Race to the Rock is a challenging 5k run or 25-mile bike race that climbs 900 feet in the last 3 miles (a 7-9% grade) to finish at the base of Chimney Rock. The rewarding 75-mile views from the finish line overlooking Lake Lure are enough to take your breath away… or what’s left of it! This is the ONLY TIME you can ever run or bike up to Chimney Rock. Cost: Save up to $10 on early registration at lakelureolympiad.com. Spectators get in free if in the Park before 7:30am.

Naturalist Niche: Nature at Night

Education

What do the creatures at Chimney Rock do after the last guest has gone home? Find out during this nighttime excursion, when wildlife is at its most active, led by an expert naturalist. Bring a headlamp or flashlight, dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water. Space is limited to 15, and advance registration is required, so call 828-625-9611. Labor Day Weekend Family Fun

Enjoy the last holiday weekend of summer experiencing what makes Chimney Rock the ideal place to play. Senior Trout Fishing the Rocky Broad River

In celebration of National Grandparents Day we invite the senior anglers to bring out their grandkids and try trout fishing together. Have you ever wanted to try fishing but don’t want to invest in all the equipment? You can borrow ours! Meet a ranger down at the Riverwalk Trail behind the Old Rock Cafe to learn the basics of fishing and try your hand at pulling some trout out of the Rocky Broad River. All supplies will be provided. All ages welcome. Cost: Free

Flock to the Rock

Join for one of Western North Carolina’s most popular Annual events, Flock to the Rock. Originally created to help folks understand why Hickory Nut Gorge is such a premier birding location, this event has grown in size and popularity every year. You don’t have to be an avid birder to find something of interest at this event, but it may just be the reason you become one. Guided bird walks, raptor flight shows, live bird demos and workshops are a few of the ways you’ll discover that Chimney Rock isn’t just for the birds! Cost: Included with Park admission.

Naturalist Nice: Fall Migration Bird Walk

The early bird gets…to see and hear early birds! This special bird walk was designed to start before the Park opens to ensure participants get the best chance to encounter a variety of birds. Taking place during fall migration also enhances the number of species expected to be in our area. This hike is considered moderate and is the prelude to the our 10th Annual Flock to the Rock event which starts at 11am. Cost: Includes Park admission: $23 Adult, $8 Annual Passholder, $13 Youth (ages 5-15), $6 Rockin’ Discovery Passholder. Advance registration required.

Fall Homeschool Day

Homeschool families and associations have been coming to the Park for experiential education opportunities for years. Hands-on programs with naturalists, guided hikes on a variety of trails and the chance to meet new families from around the region are just some of the reasons our annual homeschool events have become so popular. In 2018 we’re teaming up with some of our partners to bring you opportunities for more than one day. So, make a trip of it and take advantage of the many lessons we have planned for you. Cost: $13 Adults (Park admission); no charge Annual Passholder; $14 Youth (ages 5-15), $8.50 Rockin Discovery Passholder.

Take A Child Outside: Campout

Included with admission to Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park; one free child Park admission ticket with each paying adult. There is no fee for camping, but participants must pre-register with the office at 828-625-9611. Space is limited. Description: Never been camping? Afraid of the dark? You’re not alone. Join a park ranger and take this rare opportunity to camp in Chimney Rock State Park. A ranger will be available at 5:30 pm to help set up camp and build a campfire for a fun filled night under the stars! You must bring your own camping gear and dinner. No camping gear or food is provided for this event. Date/Time: Saturday, September 29, 2017 - 5:00pm to Sunday, September 30, 2017 - 10:00am.

Fall Girl Scout Day

Chimney Rock’s scouting events are some of our most popular events of the year. Our Fall Girl Scout Day is designed to let scouts enjoy the last weeks of autumn in one of North Carolina’s most incredible settings. Special programs created just for Girl Scouts will leave your troop with new skills, knowledge and memories they’ll carry with them for a lifetime. Annual Passholder Fall Sunrise Breakfast

There’s really nothing like watching the sun rise over Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge, so we’re opening up early just for our Annual Passholders. We’ll also serve up a yummy breakfast and hot coffee. Afterwards, guests are welcome to head out on the trails and take some photos of the waterfall or the views from Peregrine’s Point. An Eye for Fall Color iPhone Photography Class

Nature

The best camera is the camera you have with you, so why not learn how to use your iPhone camera better? Join Lynne Buchanan for this half-day class focused on creating wonderful images using your apple device. You’ll take away some great set of new skills and wonderful shots of fall color. Lynn Buchanan is an accomplished photographer who specializes in landscapes and water photos. She has taken photos throughout the United states and in Iceland, the Falklands, Bangladesh and Patagonia. Her award-winning photography has been exhibited in solo and group exhibits in museums and galleries. Cost: Includes Park admission: $40 per registrant. Space is limited. Naturalist Niche: Top of the Mountain Trek

This naturalist-led hike explores the top of Chimney Rock Mountain where you’ll discover a much different world than in the main portion of the Park. Learn about the fascinating history of this area and more about the wildlife that can be found utilizing this unique habitat. This hike is considered moderate -to-strenuous. Cost: Includes Park admission: $22 Adult, $7 Annual Passholder, $12 Youth (ages 5-15), $5 Rockin’ Discovery Passholder. Advance registration required.

Veteran’s Day Special: Free Admission

Llamapalooza for Annual Passholders

Imagine spending your day with one of Mother Nature’s most majestic and funny creatures—the llama. You’ll have a chance to join one of two hikes along the Park’s Hickory Nut Falls trail.
